Roberto is a psychotic/mentally ill robot who seems to have been built for the purpose of stabbing. He and Bender were old buddies before Roberto held up the Big Apple Bank. Roberto gave Fry and Bender some of the money before running off, for which the police arrested them instead.
Fry and Bender were put on trial, and when Fry was going to tell the court who really robbed the bank, Roberto showed up in the court wearing a fake beard. He called Fry up on the judges cell phone and told him he would murder him. Fry and Bender were sent to the "Robot Loony Bin", Roberto was later ratted out by an unknown source and joined them.
He soon escaped with Bender, held up the same bank again and took the Planet Express crew hostage. Fry, thinking he was a battle droid, started to attack Roberto and drove him to jump out a window. When Fry was cut by Roberto's "stabbing knife", it made him bleed and Fry remembered he was human.
Following the events of "Insane in the Mainframe", Bender kept his distance from Roberto. Roberto later had a background appearance in "Crimes of the Hot" and had a minor part in "Obsoletely Fabulous" in which he was going to get upgraded. Roberto's mother apparently used to weld him to the wall as a form of punishment for leaking oil on the floor. This is probably the reason he became mentally ill.
