Turanga Leela (voiced by Katey Sagal) is the captain of the Planet Express Ship. She was raised in the Cookieville Minimum-Security Orphanarium. Leela was originally thought to be an alien, and almost married someone she perceived to be from her home planet. Later in the series, she discovers she is actually a mutant. When she was born, she was celebrated as the least mutated mutant ever born.

Allegedly in her late twenties, Turanga Leela worked for Applied Cryogenics in the episode Space Pilot 3000. She was supposed to assign Fry his career as a delivery boy. Fry would later attempt to court her in nearly every episode and she rejected him nearly every time. She would reject him by telling him she had sweaty boot rash or she had to meet a ghost. At the end of the episode, The Farnsworth Parabox, Fry and Leela went to see an ape fight. Although the events at the conclusion of The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings would suggest that the two of them got together, Bender's Big Score seems to totally ignore this.

Leela has been to the altar many times, only one leading to a marriage. She almost married a shape shifting alien in A Bicyclops Built for Two. She marries and divorces Fry in Time Keeps on Slippin', is seconds from marrying the Robot Devil in The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings and is left at the altar by Lars Fillmore in Bender's Big Score.
