Bender calls the store owner Squidward Scissorhands, a cross reference between the SpongeBob SquarePants character of the same name and Edward Scissorhands.
The Planet Express crew try on various classic science fiction costumes while in the fitting room. First, everyone tries on Dune stillsuits; then Leela wears Jane Fonda's Barbarella costume, Amy is a Pan Am stewardess from 2001: A Space Odyessy, Fry sports a Star Trek 'redshirt' uniform, and Zoidberg tries on Star Wars Stormtrooper armour. The Professor finds Sean Connery's Zardoz costume to his liking.
The episode's title is a reference to 20th Century Fox, which produces Futurama and The Simpsons as well as the fact that Futurama is currently set in the 31st century.
While taking the road to the fox hunt, the ship passes an electronic informational sign which reads, "Highway jammed with broken heroes on a last-chance power drive", a line from the classic Bruce Springsteen song Born To Run.
The Huntmaster's horse is named Seagasket, a reference to the famous racehorse Seabiscuit.
The rescued fox is attacked by the crew, and half its facial skin is torn off, Terminator style.
The Professor's line, "Missed it by that much!" references the Get Smart! TV series
During a scene the Hunt Master says, "We are hunting the most dangerous game," a reference to the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell.
Bender has a packet of "Newmar's Own" catnip, referencing Julie Newmar's Catwoman character on Batman, as well as Paul Newman's "Newman's Own" line of products.
The episode may also be a reference to Resident Evil 4's first chapters, where a forest is littered with trip wires and bear traps. After Bender rescues a fox, it comes back to aid him during peril much like Leon does with a dog. Though this may simply be mere coincidence, the dogs use the same sound effects in the game itself, especially during the scenes where they hunt Bender.
